Hackers Demand Millions from Montana Schools

Early on a Tuesday morning, Havre Public Schools were “crippled” by Ryuk ransomware, disabling the school district’s computer system. The Montana school district is one in a long list of victims of this particularly vicious ransomware family.

The Ryuk ransomware infiltrated the district system through one email and spread to more emails.

These attacks are getting more vicious, and cyber criminals' ransom demands are increasing.

“They’re talking tens of millions of dollars.” -Superintendent Carlson on the ransom demand

Out of an abundance of caution, the district disconnected "everything with a blue cord" to prevent the virus from spreading.

I’m scared when I turn my computer on.” -Superintendent Carlson

As cyber criminals keep getting better, more organizations are turning to INFIMA's fully automated Cyber Security Training to keep their teams safe.
